Green hydrogen

Hydrogen, known as the fuel of the future, offers hope of obtaining a renewable and fully ecological fuel. These requirements are met, however, only by green hydrogen, which is produced in a zero-emission way. What is worth knowing about it?

Green hydrogen: what is it?

Green hydrogen owes its name to the way it is produced, which is zero-emission. Such fuel production is possible thanks to the electrolysis of water. To carry out this process, however, external energy sources are needed. If the electrolysis is powered by RES, the hydrogen produced as a result is fully zero-emission and environmentally friendly. 

Plans for the future

Hydrogen fuel in the form of green hydrogen was identified by the European Commission in “A hydrogen strategy for a climate-neutral Europe” as one of the important factors that will make it possible to deliver the goals of the European Green Deal. The strategy assumes that by 2050 green hydrogen will be a widely available energy source.

Green hydrogen in Poland

Poland is the third-largest producer of hydrogen in Europe, but the fuel is not obtained in a zero-emission way. The Polish Hydrogen Strategy (Polska Strategia Wodorowa), however, assumes the introduction of changes that will make it possible to produce green hydrogen. Creating the conditions to launch installations for producing hydrogen from low- and zero-emission sources is defined in the document as a strategic goal by 2030. The target capacity of production installations is 2 GW and is to be based in particular on electrolyzers. 

Green hydrogen: applications

One of the applications of the green fuel of the future is obtaining heat. Termet, together with Warsaw University of Technology and Fuel Cell Poland, is working on a heating appliance that will ultimately be powered by hydrogen fuel cells (gas will be the transitional phase). Green hydrogen is therefore needed and can solve many of the problems Europe currently faces, especially in obtaining heat.
